Just over a month before the pandemic started, I was fortunate to be able to stand on the stage in front of an auditorium of people for TEDxQueensU 2020 and share insights from my Master’s thesis research. Take a watch!
I am curious to know: What did you think? What's your connection to the topic? Did you have any a-ha moments while listening? Send me an email with your thoughts! And please share the video widely among your friends & family! Now more than ever, we need to be talking about taking care of our holistic being - body, mind and spirit.
Are you also, like me, a lifelong student at the University of Life and curious to know more about the research project? I invite you to read the journal article of my research. It was published in a peer-reviewed, world-leading health promotion journal and offers more detail than could obviously be provided in my TEDx talk. And I am always happy to connect with and talk to people about this topic so please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or comments!
I am the first one to admit that the calm, confident, composed person you see on that stage was not who I was even 3 years ago – and definitely not who I was 10 years ago. In high school and undergrad, I was your timid grey mouse – quiet, shy, and definitely not looking for situations to put myself in the spotlight!
Whenever part of the course assignments included a presentation, you can bet I dreaded that day all semester. I still remember the oral presentation components of completing my German minor – every single semester for 4 years straight. Regardless if it was a presentation in German or English, it didn’t matter. I would have to go through the nerve-racking mental fuzziness, dry mouth, sweaty palms and shaky legs that many of us experience with public speaking. You could easily classify me as having a public speaking anxiety.
I share this background information, this 180-degree flip, because I am living proof of the power of energetic healing modalities and the efficacy of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). This stress-reduction tool was an important part of my journey to being able to stand on that red dot.
The other behind-the-scenes tidbit that the TEDx talk doesn’t show you was that, because of the stress in my life in January 2020, I was actually also dealing with a runny nose, sore throat and a persistent cough in the days leading up to my TEDx appearance – talk about added undue pressure… when you have to wear a mic for a presentation, the desire to not cough becomes all the more intense!
With a toolbox of techniques for body, mind & spirit, I was able to overcome the physical challenges and emotional fears about stepping onto that stage. And of course, my physical symptoms cleared up right after that big endeavour had been completed! Stress and sickness are good friends.
Looking back, I’m so glad I even considered doing the initial audition and years later, it still feels surreal to realize I actually did it!
